Using five cards, players try to make the best poker hand they can. The highest hand wins the pot. Ties are broken by the high card.
The best hand is a straight flush, containing five cards in the same suit. A pair of kings isn’t bad off the deal, but it’s not the best possible hand.
There are several variants of poker, all of which share important features. Each variant has its own card dealing method. A dealer determines the card dealing method, and the dealer may or may not pass out all the cards at once.
The “showdown” is the moment where all the cards are revealed, and the player with the best hand wins the pot. This happens after the last betting round. The pot may be won by the player who makes the best bet, or by the player who has the highest hand.
A player can choose to check, fold, or raise. A player may choose to fold if they’re not sure of what they have. If they do decide to raise, they must match the bet of the player to their left.
The best possible hand is a “trip” of sevens. A “trip” is seven cards, two distinct pairs plus a fifth card. The best possible hand is also the best hand that can be made at that moment.
A “high card” is the most important card in the game, and it can break ties when multiple people have the same card. It’s not as important as a pair of kings or a straight flush, but it can be a game changer.
