Poker is a card game played by two or more players on a table. Each player places a bet of either a fixed amount or a percentage of the total pot before receiving his cards. During the course of a hand, players may place additional bets in order to improve their hands. These bets are called raises. In addition to raising, players may also check (stay in the hand without betting) or fold if they don’t have a good hand.

A successful poker player needs to have the ability to read his opponents, including studying their betting patterns & body language. He must also have a high level of confidence in his own abilities & be able to weigh up the odds of a given situation. Strategic bluffing is an essential tool for increasing the chances of making a winning hand, although it requires a certain degree of discipline to stick to one’s strategy and avoid unnecessary risks.

The turn to deal & the turn to bet passes clockwise from player to player, starting with the first player to the left of the button. The dealer has the last right to shuffle the deck, and must offer the shuffled pack to the opponent on his right for a cut before dealing.
