Poker is a game played with cards and money. Each player must make an ante before the hand is dealt, and then each round there is betting around the table. At the end of each round the highest hand wins the pot.
The best hand in poker is a pair of sevens, but you can also have a straight, three of a kind, or a flush. You need two of your own cards plus five community cards to create a winning hand. If you have a strong enough bluff and luck, even a bad hand can win.
When betting comes to you, you can say “call” if you want to match the last bet. You can also say “raise” if you want to increase the amount of money in the bet. If someone calls your raise, you can say “fold” to put down your cards and forfeit the hand.
The flop is the third card that opens up the board, and it often helps players decide what type of hand they have. If you have a pair of 7’s and the flop shows 4-7, you would have the nuts (the best possible hand at this point). If the river card reveals an A, then your 7’s are no longer the nuts. High card breaks ties when the pairs are equal.
